About Jamila

Jamila Pomeroy is the owner and Editor-in-Chief of Avocado Toast Post, a new lifestyle magazine based in Vancouver, B.C. In addition to this, she is a freelance writer and journalist; contributing to the likes of BBC, Red Bull Canada, Daily Hive, Montecristo Magazine, and BeatRoute magazine— where Pomeroy is both an editor and contributing writer.

Prior to journalism, Pomeroy graduated from the Arts Institute of Vancouver with a BPA1, exploring culinary and business within the restaurant industry. She then went on to work as a pastry chef, focusing on alternative and luxury pastry, while creating cakes and edible art for the wedding industry.

After leaving the culinary industry with pursuit of a career that connected to the arts and her community, Pomeroy began to paint as a reproduction painter for Vancouver-based artist, Sid Dickens, while writing part-time. Noticing the lack of real connection to designers and people in the lifestyle publication industry, Pomeroy began to form Avocado Toast Post.

“I think creatives and readers alike are hungry for something that connects on a deeper level. It’s one thing to see an editorial spread, and another to dig into why these garments were created; what inspired the designers; how these garments are made; and how these garments are impacting society. When you begin to think about fashion as art, you realize there has been a huge missed opportunity to tell impactful stories through clothing.”

Pomeroy contributes to many facets of the publication industry including the arts, culture, music, fashion, fringe politics, and food. She is inspired and highly motivated by the arts and connecting people through storytelling. “Being a journalist comes with a lot of responsibility as we are essentially recording history. I really pride myself in telling stories that positively impact my community. I want people to feel empowered and motivated to make positive waves in the world.” When she’s not working on a story or tending to her business, you can find her painting, baking, drinking coffee in her Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, and eating avocado toast.

Here is why Jamila loves Secret Location:

“I am all about supporting local, alongside independent Canadian designers. I love how Secret Location supports quality craftsmanship and responsible production; they are truly setting a precedent for social responsibility in the fashion world. The store’s layout breathes the intention of a carefully curated gallery which is creatively stimulating, as it brings garments to life — this is not just a store, it is an experience.”
