Credited with opening Canada’s first concept store, Secret Location’s Carey Hulshof is somewhat of an enigma.
A world traveller, she lived, breathed, and studied in the epicentre of Italian design, Milan, known for its unique blend of art, culture, and gastronomy. It was here that she further honed her love for design, obtaining a master’s degree from the prestigious Istituto Marangoni.
It is with her vigour and drive, along with her passion for fashion, art, and design, that she created Secret Location - an interior design firm and destination concept store for people to feel inspired, to escape, and to discover a well-curated catalogue of unique pieces in a space aimed to draw wonder and surprise.
And, Carey does not do things halfway. As Secret Location developed she was acutely involved in the design of their first brick and mortar location, partnering with talented craftsmen on a myriad of pieces. Initially including both a store and restaurant, both have been praised for their detail and functionality in publications such as Vogue and National Geographic. But this was just the beginning.
Carey now draws from her extensive experience, to provide interior design services. With global demand, this has introduced projects across North America, now venturing into Europe.
Carey believes in sustainability. She is heavily invested in how things are sourced and is a supporter of ethical and responsible production, sustainability, and craftsmanship. This informs how she and her team operate, source, and problem solve. She is a lover of story telling, a quality which is integrated into all that Secret Location does.

We offer comprehensive services for residential and commercial clients both large and small. From full scale development to a quick face lift, each project is created to meet both functionality and aesthetic. The result is a space that exceeds your expectations through the mixture of materiality, found objects, vintage, and custom pieces. Secret Location is a full-service luxury design firm, servicing residential and commercial clients both large and small. From renovations to building from the ground up, Carey and her team will communicate diligently to ensure that your vision comes to life. Based in Vancouver, Canada with projects now ranging from Europe to across North America, each project is created to meet both functionality and aesthetic.
